Growing up, I was a big fan of the 1988 film, Beetlejuice. It wasn't quite a hyper-fixation, but the step right below that, which for me is "special interest." So my partner took me to see the new sequel for our date night, and oh my Time Lord, it was almost as good as the original! Some parts of it did feel rushed, and/or ill-explained, but overall it was funny, cute, and lived up to the first movie.
! ! ! Possible Spoilers, reader discretion advised. ! ! !
In this sequel, we see the return of Lydia (Winona Ryder), Delia (Catherine O'Hara), and of course, the star of the film, Mr. Juice himself (Michael Keaton) as three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River and the old Maitland house for a funeral.
Returning fans expecting an appearance from the Maitlands may be disappointed to learn that Adam and Barbara have "moved on" in the time between films (I was, for a moment), but never fear; Adam's old model of Winter River still stands, once again serving as home to the self-proclaimed "ghost with the most." And their attic is almost exactly as they left it.
Just like before, Lydia must call on Mr. B for help after her skeptic daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega) finds the Handbook and makes her way into The Netherworld. But his help comes with a condition: he still wants to be Mr. Deetz.
Also bringing in the talents of Danny DeVito and Willem Defoe, this sequel is filled with witty, ghostly humour and nostalgia, and is a must-see for fans of the original film (1988) or television series (1989-1991).
Oh, and we finally find out whose finger Mr. Juice pulled the ring from in his first nuptials with Lydia.
